The Toledo Museum is superb, especially for Baroque art, but it also has good Renaissance and 18th century art. https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=97273696 97273696 Hals, Shrovetide Merry Makers, detail, Met https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=98956393 98956393 Hals, Shrovetide Merry Makers, detail, Met https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=98956394 98956394 Hals, Shrovetide Merry Makers, detail, Met https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=98956395 98956395 Saenredam, St. Bavo Church in Haarlem, 1631, Philadelphia https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920457 179920457 Saenredam, St. Bavo Church in Haarlem, 1631, Philadelphia https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920458 179920458 Vliet, St. Pieterskerck in Leiden, 1653, Ringling Museum https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=150358096 150358096 Vliet, St. Pieterskerck in Leiden, 1653, Ringling Museum https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=150358097 150358097 Ter Brugghen, Bacchante with an Ape, detail, Getty https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=101933735 101933735 Berchem, Young Woman and a Moor, detail, Hartford This painting satirizes Dutch middle class fears about the "new woman" - independent, unchaperoned, extravagant, and sexually dissipated. The nude statues decorating the fireplace and the other luxurious furnishings do not work as a moralizing contrast to the son's poverty in line with conventional vanitas imagery., This is, after all, the house of the good father who is already outside restoring wealth and social position to his penitent son. If this reading is correct, the painting uses the parable not to question wealth but to distinguish between its virtuous consumption in an elegant but moral palace and its squandering in a seedy tavern amidst prostitutes. https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=159047557 159047557 van Bassen, Return of the Prodigal Son, c. 1620, Detroit https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=159047558 159047558 van Bassen, Return of the Prodigal Son, c. 1620, Detroit https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=159047559 159047559 van Bassen, Return of the Prodigal Son, c. 1620, Detroit https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=159047560 159047560 van Bassen, Return of the Prodigal Son, c. 1620, Detroit https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=159047561 159047561 van de Venne, He Who Wears the Pants Has the Power, 1625-40, Vassar College https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920507 179920507 van de Venne, He Who Wears the Pants Has the Power, 1625-40, Vassar College https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920512 179920512 van de Venne, He Who Wears the Pants Has the Power, 1625-40, Vassar College https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920511 179920511 van de Venne, Who Wears the Pants has Power, detail, Vassar College Museum https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=99405020 99405020 van de Venne, He Who Wears the Pants Has the Power, 1625-40, Vassar College https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920509 179920509 van de Venne, He Who Wears the Pants Has the Power, 1625-40, Vassar College https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=179920510 179920510 TerBrugghen, Boy with a Glass of Wine, 1623, private collection https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=181910112 181910112 TerBrugghen, Boy with a Glass of Wine, 1623, private collection https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=181910113 181910113 Quast, A Quack in a Barn, c. 1635, Yale https://socialhistoryofart.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=190536180 190536180
