Among other things, bees were known since classical antiquity as natural emblems of monarchy, hierarchical order, military power and empire building, and celestial ascent. Here the bees symbolize the perfect monarchy of the Catholic church headed by the pope, the global empire of the Roman Catholic church in an age of missionary piety, and the eternal, celestial fame of Urban VIII written in the stars.
