Christ's ribs here double as the hand marks of beseeching pilgrims. Outdoor crucifixes, Crucifixions, and sculptures of the Passion were ubiquitous in Brittany. They served as sites for popular penitential pilgrimages known as pardons (for the forgiveness received).
