My essay discusses the emergence within late medieval Christian culture, of a secular landscape aesthetic prizing the beauty, cosmic order, and diversity of God's creation. The parallel between a secular idea of the Golden Age (an original perfect moment) and the Christian idea of Paradise is also discussed, along with animal symbolism.
