Social History of Art

About Me

Proud to say that Robert Baldwin and I have been friends for thirty years!  We met in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Art Institute of Chicago.  Currently I am director of the University at Buffalo Art Galleries, which includes UB Anderson Gallery, which serves as the university's museum.  UB Anderson Gallery was donated to the university by David Anderson, son of NYC gallerist Martha Jackson who founded and directed the Martha Jackson Gallery from 1953 until her death in 1969.  Considered by the Art Dealers Association to be one of the eight dealers most influential on the modern art movement, she gave the first exhibitions in NYC to Jim Dine, Louise Nevelson, Tapies, Appel, Grace Hartigan, and Gutai Group, among others.  The museum holds a strong group of works from her collection and the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives with extensive photographic and provenance information for many of these artists' earliest works.
